Hare And Drum is a mother-daughter duo: Agnieszka who thinks up the designs as well as creates items in wood, paint, and decoupage, and her mom Maria who does the beautiful hand embroidery.
2. What made you open your shop and why Etsy?
I started Hare and Drum in March 2008 as a decoupage shop, creating and selling items inspired by historical design. I opened the shop following a year as a stay at home mom during which I crafted for friends and family. My direct motivation to get started on Etsy was Rob White’s interview with Martha Stewart on her show. 
3. Do you sell your items anywhere else?
Etsy is currently my only active venue.
4. How did you choose your shop name?
History inspired the shop’s name: my Hare and Drum logo comes from a 1210 manuscript and carries symbolism of dexterity and rejuvenation. I really needed to feel rejuvenated after leaving the academic world and becoming a stay at home mom, a fantastic new job, but admittedly a bit repetitive.
5. What are your favourite things to do?
Unlike many crafters, I love taking photos of my items for sale. That stems from my interest in photography in general, although I do not have fancy equipment. I’m a photographer of choice for family and friends’ casual events. My other fave is being in nature, especially in the forest. My parents’ house stands among pine trees on the edge of the forest and I’ve always been enamored with warm quiet beauty of the woods.
6. What inspires you? Historical design was my original inspiration and still remains a favorite: many of my embroidery designs are based on or inspired by Art Nouveau museum finds. I decided, however, that my shop needed a clearer focus and now most of our creations are nature inspired. Color plays a big role in my design process: I usually start with a base or background color and match it with one or two more, not always in a predictable manner: purple and red or blue and green go really well together, in my opinion.
7. Of all the items you make for you shop, which do you enjoy making the most?
I have the most fun designing digital collages of vintage images. I find the images, clean them up digitally to give them new life, and then invent a story or a humorous concept when putting them together with other images. I later print them on greeting cards or use them in decoupage. My friends love those!
8. Which is the most popular item you sell?
My bestseller is definitely the business card case that doubles as card display. I am the only one on Etsy who carries this style. The item is versatile and available for personalization; it is also a potential “man” gift of the useful kind, and those are hard to come by on Etsy. 
9. What handmade possession do you cherish?
I have a cable turtleneck sweater, knit by my Grandma some 15 years ago. She is now in the final stages of Alzheimer’s and no longer knits, recognizes family, or even talks cohesively. Every time I look at the sweater I remember how wonderful she used to be. I cherish her work so much I’m afraid to wear it!

PeskyCatDesigns - Elisa, the creator behind the shop, is my Internet buddy. Her shop reflects her personality very well: warm, calm, steady. Her purses are such high quality! I love looking at art by RestlessThings. The designs are so simple in the color schemes, so delicate. I really like her choice of backgrounds she works on: brown paper bags, book pages. It adds a whimsical aura to her work. Finally, I keep returning to PudledukSoapCo for more and more yummy smelling, quality soap. 
Thank you to Hare and Drum for being the Favourite Etsy Shop Feature this week. I am alway amazed at the embroidery work that is done in this shop. You have to see them all. I love how the fabric is a bold colour and all the stitch work is usually done in one colour. I think that affect is beautiful. I can see why the business card holders are such a hit. I think I need one for myself. But which one to choose? It would be a hard decision. Check out this wonderful Etsy shop and you will see why so many Etsy Treasuries feature their products.
I had a feature all lined up for today but things happen and sometimes you have to adjust so the feature that would have been this week will be featured on another Friday.

I love how natural all the knitted toys are in this shop even down to the stuffing. Victoria and I have spent some time gushing over all the little animals and which ones we would like to own. We especially love the gnomes. I am loving the new Little Meadow Babies shop. I have fallen in love with the drawstring bag. Can grown ups use that too?

I just discovered this shop about a week ago and Im still in awe at these felted bags. You just have to see how amazing they are. You can buy the patterns or you can buy some of the bags. I would love to be able to make one but I dont know if Im feeling brave enough. Perhaps I would just have to buy a bag and admire it.

I dont own any of these knitted toy patterns but I wish I did. I just drool every time I see them. I just want to get my hands on some of these patterns and start making some super cute stuff although I think once I started I wouldnt be able to stop hehe.
Well there wasnt a Favourite Etsy Shop Feature but I had fun showing you other knitters that I look up to. I hope you have maybe found some new knitters that you like as well.
1. Tell us a bit about yourself.
I'm an artist in the Pacific Northwest. I have tried on many different hats in my life, assistant naturalist, coffee slinger, web designer, tour manager and artist liason, bellydancer, and now, glass artist, and it is a hat that seems squarely stuck on my head!
2. What made you open your shop and why Etsy?
I have another shop on etsy where I sell art glass beads and jewelry, and it seemed like a good fit to put my glass drinking straws on here, too. I love browsing etsy for all the unknown treasures I find, and liked the idea of providing something functional as well as something fun.
3. Where else do you sell your straws? I do a few wholesale sales to stores, and usually have them on display when I do local artisan shows in the Portland, Oregon area. I just started selling them on HyenaCart.com, which is a place that sells Earth-friendly items. I also have a shop on Artfire, JUICEGLASS
4. What are your favourite things to do?
Play with glass! I am just starting to learn to knit, which is a challenge. I really enjoy reading books, camping, and being a mother to my son, Derek. I didn't know how amazingly fun it would be. But I also enjoy getting a break from the Mom role to just be myself and spend time alone walking, cooking, or just sitting in a chair outside and being.
5. What handmade possession do you cherish?
Of my own, I made my first glass paperweight a few years ago and it is beautiful to me. I really, really love handmade ceramic mugs, and have a favorite made by Jason Russell, that fits my hands perfectly www.jasonrussellceramics.com
6. What inspires you?
I am inspired by other artists, colors, and glass itself. The very way it behaves leads me to new ideas. I am not allowed to look at art glass after 10 pm or I will be up all night with my brain racing. It's worse than caffeine. I am also inspired by the planet. The reason I make glass straws is to help in my own small way to slow our gobbling up of resources and not paying attention to what we leave behind. With my straws, the Earth is my muse.
7. Other than straws, what else do you make out of glass?
Beads! Lots and lots of beads! And jewelry created with my own glass art. www.juiceglass.etsy.com I use only local glass in my beads, created less than 15 miles from home. I am so fortunate to live where so much art glass is created, as a raw material. All my beads are washed and cleaned in rainwater from my rainbarrels, so for me, the Pacific Northwest has a lot of rain and a lot of glass available for use!
8. Glass straws are so unique, what have been people's reaction to them?
The response has been wonderful. At first glance, it sounds pretty wrong. GLASS straws? Fragile, breakable, easy-to-cut-your-lip glass as a straw!? The glass I use is borosilicate, which is basically what Pyrex is, so it is very sturdy. I drop straws in the studio all the time and more often than not, they do not break. Once people understand that, they really light up to the idea. Drinking out of one feels fantastic, the weight and the sparkle add elegance to a drink, and since the straw isn't plastic, it doesn't compress, meaning you don't "work" as hard to get your beverage. It's fabulous.
9. Which of your straws have been the most popular?
The bent straws are selling very well. I love doing ones in colors, and hope to make packaged sets of more than one color soon. I just added pink straws, but overall the tea green ones are the best selling color. I also have carrying cases for toting your straight straw around with you, made with leftover fabric by a friend who makes baby clothes! They sell so fast they often are not available until more are made!

Wook Woodworking - I couldn't afford most of what they make but I love it. And they go from full on wooden clothing chests to wooden buttons for clothes! 
Thank you to Straws by Carli for taking part in my blog feature this week. Dont you just love this idea of a glass straw. I bet my sister would love to try these out. I dont think I will be able to resist buying a set and seeing what they are like. I love the idea of the carrying case so that you can take them with you and use them where ever you go. How very environmentally friendly and fun at the same time. I think I will now have to check out Carli's glass beads as well.
I love doing these interviews because I get to find out more about my favourite shops and some of their favourite shops have become my favourite shops as well. I hope you are enjoying reading them as well.

1. Tell us a bit about yourself.
I was born and raised near Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada. I now live in Southwestern Ontario, at the Canada/U.S. border. I was a Kindergarten teacher for many years, and now I do some volunteer work with children, run my business from home, and enjoy other hobbies when I have time! My husband is an artist and photographer, and my 2 adult children live in Toronto.
2. What made you open your shop and why Etsy?
I had always enjoyed sewing and quilting, and when I needed some storage for knitting needles and knitting projects I created some needle rolls and project bags. They were fun to make, and when I had created more than I could use myself, I decided to try selling them. I had seen Etsy features on blogs, and was impressed with the products available there. I hoped Etsy would be a good venue for my products, so I read all the help guides before taking the plunge and opening my shop in August 2007. When sales started taking off, I knew I needed to become a ‘real’ business. I was fortunate that it all worked out very well for me!
3. Other than Etsy, where else do you sell your items?
Recently I was a vendor at a show for knitters, and that was a lot of fun. I may do a couple of shows per year. Some contacts through Etsy have led to wholesale accounts in the U.S., Australia, and the U.K.
4. How did you choose your shop name?
I created a username that could reflect either sewing or knitting.
5. What are your favourite things to do?
My favourite things to do craft-wise are sewing, quilting, knitting, spinning, dyeing yarn and dyeing fabric. I also enjoy travel and spending time with family.
6. What inspires you?The window of my sewing room looks out over our garden, and I am inspired by the colours of nature and the changing seasons. Inspiration also comes from the fabric. I am drawn to color, bold graphic design, and quality cotton fabric. I use many of the current popular designer fabrics, also cottons from Japan, and hand screen-printed fabric.
7. Of all the items you make for your shop, which do you enjoy making the most?
I enjoy making my Boxy Bags the most. Each fabric gives the bag a different look, so I always enjoy turning the finished bag right-side out to see the finished product.
8. Which is the most popular item you sell?
The Boxy Bag is the most popular. I have also made it in different sizes and proportions for custom orders.
9. What handmade possession do you cherish?I love collecting work by local artists, such as pottery, but my most cherished possessions are paintings by my grandmother. She was a contemporary of the Canadian “Group of Seven”, and she died before I was born. We are lucky to have some of her work.
10. Name 3 other Etsy shops you love to visit.
Three other Etsy shops I like to visit are AuntyCookie (screen-printed fabric), Kallistiquilts (fabric from Japan), and WoollyFabulous (amazing felted wool creations). Most of my Etsy favourites are fabric, yarn, and fibre sellers.

I use it when I am making my knitted toys because it keeps all the pieces together and I dont have to worry about losing them. Every time I use it I think, I need to get more of these in many different sizes because they are just so handy. Not only handy but well made and beautiful at the same time. I love the fabrics that she uses. The colours are combined to perfection and its hard to decide which one I like the best.
